Customer Service Analyst

BBOXX Capital Rwanda wishes to recruit qualified and self-motivated staff to work in the following position; – Customer Service Analyst

BBOXX is an international company based in London leading the solar revolution across the developing world.  Currently operating in 14 different countries BBOXX has already electrified 325,000 people.  We are aiming to make that number 20 million by the year 2020.

Unlike other off-grid solar providers, BBOXX controls the whole process from design to manufacture to distribution and financing

Reports to: Head of Knowledge and Aftersales

Location: EA HQ – Kigali Rwanda

Purpose:
BBOXX is expanding beyond solar to give loans for all kinds of assets that will improve the lives of our clients in rural Africa, and needs to understand which clients qualify for these upgrade loans.  We’re also closing securitization deals bundling thousands of clients’ loans together—the first time it’s been done in rural Africa—and our investors need to understand the risks.  To this end, we’re looking for someone to manage all analysis and reporting related to credit, customer service, and other aspects of aftersales.  You’ll be responsible for analyzing BBOXX’s portfolio of more than 20,000 clients in rural Africa to spot patterns and trends in client behavior, and make recommendations for how to better serve clients and improve their payment performance.  You’ll also be responsible for developing metrics and dashboards to measure and report on client credit and payments, customer service, and contact centre performance.

Job’s Responsibilities

  • Analyze troves of proprietary data to spot trends and find patterns in client behavior, with an aim to develop a predictive model
  • Perform original qualitative research to understand clients more fully
  • Conduct secondary research into best practices in credit management in developing countries
  • Develop metrics and dashboards to analyze the impact of BBOXX’s operations on client payments, satisfaction, and call centre operations
  • Ensure regular and timely reporting on these dashboards
  • Make recommendations for how to improve client payment performance and satisfaction

Description of tasks

  • Develop quantitative models for understanding client behavior as it relates to payments, satisfaction, utilization, and retention
  • Crunch millions of data points to analyze client behavior
  • Develop a predictive model of credit risk to help investors price BBOXX securities composed of thousands of rural clients’ receivables
  • Interview clients in-depth to better understand their lives, preferences, and behavior
  • Develop and conduct creative qualitative research methods such as Human Centered Design to design improvements to BBOXX’s interactions with customers
  • Interview third parties in microfinance and related fields to understand best practices in credit management in developing countries
  • Design dashboards to help BBOXX measure the effectiveness of its operations
  • Crunch the numbers each month to produce timely and accurate reports on business performance
  • Perform one-off analyses to measure the impact of improvement projects
  • Check for errors and inconsistencies in data to ensure it is clean and accurate
  • Develop recommendations for senior management based on your research

Person Specification
We’re looking for intellectually curious, analytical, data-driven people who care about making a difference.  You will need to be part detective—who can investigate problems to figure out what is really going wrong; part data scientist—who can develop models and crunch numbers; and part M&E specialist—who is focused on measuring impact. Good candidates will:

  • Care deeply about the problems BBOXX is trying to solve.  If you don’t have a passion for renewable energy or development, this job probably isn’t for you.
  • Possess a university degree from a top-tier university or at least 2-years work experience in a quantitative field.  Ideally your degree is in a quantitative field like statistics, engineering, mathematics, or science.
  • Have an insatiable drive to learn and produce new insight.  “Intellectual curiosity” is a term that often gets bandied about, but we really mean it.  Why would a solar client ever choose to go back to using kerosene?  If I gave you a list of 1,000 villagers in rural Kenya, which ones would be likely to default in the next 6 months?  Are our calls to clients actually encouraging them to make their payments?  You’re always asking questions, and you could happily spend hours combing through data looking for answers to those questions, even without being asked to do so.  If research, analysis, and producing new knowledge don’t excite you, this is not the job for you.
  • Have prior work experience in finance, research, banking, M&E.  At minimum you need to have experience analyzing large datasets and producing models, but the ideal candidate will also bring outside expertise specifically related to credit risk management and portfolio analysis.  Operational experience and knowledge of how to actually manage credit risk in such a setting is a plus.
  • Be willing to work in rural areas of Africa.  This job isn’t only a data junkie – you’ll also need to be comfortable with qualitative research, which will mean interviewing clients in rural areas, and developing novel methods for improving our understanding of clients and evaluating potential operational improvements (similar to Ideo’s design methods).  As such you may need to spend 15-20% of your time in rural areas.  Our staff have been known to sleep at clients’ homes to better understand how they use our products (you won’t have to do that, but you may find you want to!)
  • Take a methodical approach to solving problems.  You don’t go with your gut the moment you spot a problem, but first take the time to gather and analyze evidence to understand the problem.  You are comfortable with both deductive (constructing the big picture from disparate pieces of evidence) and analytical (breaking a problem down into its component parts) reasoning.
  • Pay persistent attention to detail.  You need to have a keen sense for when something just isn’t right.  If there are inconsistencies or logical problems with data, they jump out at you, and you focus on identifying and fixing them.  Anything less would keep you awake at night.
  • Be proficient in a range of data analysis tools.  Excel is a minimum: we would also expect you to be familiar with statistical tools like SPSS and Python.

Systems and Process Officer

BBOXX Capital Rwanda wishes to recruit qualified and self-motivated staff to work in the following position of – Systems & Process Officer

BBOXX is an international company based in London leading the solar revolution across the developing world.  Currently operating in 14 different countries BBOXX has already electrified 325,000 people.  We are aiming to make that number 20 million by the year 2020.  Unlike other off-grid solar providers, BBOXX controls the whole process from design to manufacture to distribution and financing.

JOB DESCRIPTION – Systems & Process Officer

Reports to: Systems and Process Manager
Location: Field and Distribution Centre

Purpose:
To stop small problems from becoming big problems: providing day-to-day support to field staff in correctly implementing processes and using tools, and carrying out audit and implementation tasks in the field as required by the Systems and Process Manager.

Job’s Responsibilities

  • Travel to BBOXX shops to spot check how well staff are following processes and using tools, and correct them where necessary
  • Serve as the local point of contact for troubleshooting IT tools and fixing problems with implementation
  • Lead refresher and change management trainings
  • Audit systems and processes using the BBOXX Process Audit tool
  • Provide recommendations for improvements to systems and processes
Description of tasks
  •     Diagnose problems in field-based IT tools and report bugs to the IT team
  •     Fix problems in usage of IT tools that do not require changes to the tools themselves
  •     Troubleshoot implementation problems (both IT- and non-IT related)
  •     Train staff when processes are changing or when they need refreshers
  •     Coach staff to improve at carrying out systems and processes: understanding where (and why) they are having problems, and patiently and persistently working with them to improve
  •     Conduct spot audits of process implementation at shops, as requested by line managers or the Systems and Process Manager
  •     Support the Systems and Process Manager in carrying out quarterly process audits, observing staff behaviors and entering results in an Excel-based tool
  •     Understand a wide variety of processes, ranging from sales to stock management to HR, at a high enough level of detail to be able to train others and answer questions
Person Specification
We’re looking for energetic, disciplined, process-oriented people who can fix problems and are willing to get their hands dirty.  Good candidates will:

  •     Possess a university degree or at least 2 years work experience.  Good fields are things like Business Process Management, Systems Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.Ideally you have prior work experience that exposed you to the inner workings of “how things get done”.
  •     Be willing to travel frequently in rural areas.  A lot of this job will involve running around “firefighting” at shops in rural areas.  One day you may receive a call from a Shop Manager that her Customer Relationship Management system is not working, and you have to jump on a motorcycle to go help her.  The next day your manager may call and say there is a problem with stock management, so you have to visit five sites to see what shop managers are doing wrong and fix it.
  •     Have a drivers’ license
  •     Experience working with IT systems is a big plus
  •     Be uncompromisingly results-oriented.  This means you are not happy just because an activity has been completed, but are only satisfied when you see the results.  And you look for a similar standard in others: if something is not being done properly, you do not accept excuses—you hold that person to what they are supposed to be doing, or find the real problem and fix it.
  •     Enjoy learning and be able to grasp a breadth of fields and technologies. You will be assisting with processes across every function at BBOXX, from sales management to technical, as well as IT tools.  As such, you need to be willing to learn about anything.  You don’t need to be an expert in all these fields right now, but we are looking for someone with the intellectual curiosity to get to know them over time.
  •     Be persistent.  People don’t get things overnight or from a single training session; you will need to continually assess how well process implementation and keep following up with people until they are doing it right.
  •     Teach and coach effectively.  Whether presenting in front of a class, or sitting one-on-one with an individual student, you can help others learn.  Even more importantly you can coach others—you don’t just talk well, but can understand what is blocking someone and tailor your teaching to them.
  •     Be able to analyze data at an intermediate level.  You won’t need to do any complicated analyses, but you do need the detail orientation and analytical skills to process quantitative audit results into useful analyses.
  •     Use Excel proficiently.  You’ll need to prepare basic reports and budgets in Excel.  Nothing fancy, but you need to know formulas, and be willing to learn more complicated functions.
